ABOUT AMANDA – ARTIST
‘From being a small child my passions have been drawing and dancing. When I was nineteen my passion for drawing led to a year in Florence studying life drawing and painting with ‘Signorina Simi’.
During my twenties and early thirties my passions took a back seat for several years while I made a living as a product development assistant for Waddingtons Games and had a family. However during this time I managed to continue drawing and painting by going to evening classes and having private tuition with Gladys Langley, who had taught me at school. Dear Mrs Langley was happy for my baby son to come along with me to her studio where he would sleep in his pram (most of the time) while I worked.
When my children went to school, I spent two years doing a part-time Fine Art Foundation course at York College of Art. By this time I was also working as an assistant to an interior designer. At one point I intended to continue on to do a degree in Fine Art, but eventually I decided instead, to go and study one day a week with Pam Rex at Swarthmore in Leeds. Pam had previously taught me for many years in her inspiring evening classes, and it was with her encouragement that I went on to have four solo exhibitions during the late nineties. Gillian Roberts was also a fine and very generous teacher who helped and encouraged me during that time.
As well as making art I was spending a lot of time dancing. I experimented with many dance forms, such as Afro Caribbean, Salsa, Samba, Kathak, Capoeira, Contact Improvisation. I collaborated with Touchdown Dance which led to a performance at Romiley Forum. Working with Touchdown inspired me to make visual representations of dance through photography and drawing. Eventually my drawings of dance became the subject of an exhibition called ‘move touch connect’, held at Yorkshire Dance, in 1998.
It is essential for my wellbeing that something creative is going on in my life. Since moving to Harrogate in 1999 my focus has of necessity been on teaching yoga. However, I’ve found that this provides me with an outlet for my creativity, as does making a garden. Although running my yoga business and teaching are pretty much all-consuming, I still find time to make a few pieces of artwork. I hope you will enjoy viewing them or even buy one for yourself!
