This is what Justine Brooks says about the mini course experience: ‘I’ve been looking to deepen my yoga practice and learn new elements to bring into my personal practice for some time, so this short course was perfect for me. Amanda’s understanding of somatic processes, her breadth of training and experience is enormously impressive and she has much to impart for any yogi who wants to explore a deeper somatic awareness in their yoga practice. As a psychotherapist specialising in trauma, I find so much at so many levels in Amanda’s teachings and feel that this course has benefited me on a professional as well as a personal level.’

Harrogate Yoga Classes
At Harrogate Yoga there are courses available for all levels of ability – from beginners to advanced practitioners. Amanda and Laura ensure safe and effective teaching through running yoga courses, not drop-in classes. This system enables students to progress in a class with others at a similar level, and means Amanda and Laura get to know their students’ personalities, abilities and any health problems.
All classes begin with breath awareness and gentle warming-up exercises. Traditional asana, Sun Salutations and ‘vinyasa flow’ sequences are included according to level of experience or expertise. Classes always finish with relaxation and meditative practices. The ultimate aim of Amanda and Laura is for students to gain a greater sense of wellbeing.
Some of the classes at Harrogate Yoga are physically challenging. However Amanda believes that whilst adhering to the traditions and basic principles of yoga, it is always possible to make adaptations to suit individual capabilities and lifestyles. Her teaching is carefully modified to reflect this.
When coming to class, wear clothes you can move easily in and avoid eating for a couple of hours beforehand. If coming to Amanda’s or Laura’s yoga classes in Harrogate for the first time, please complete and submit a health form.
Venue and parking
Most classes take place in a beautiful yoga studio in Harrogate – overlooking the Stray – fully equipped with the best quality mats, props and accessories, so there’s no need to bring any yoga equipment. If coming by car, it is usually possible to park on Princes Villa Road or South Park Road (a parking disc may be required). Please avoid parking on the slip road on York Place.
What is Yoga?
Very simply, yoga can mean ‘union’ or ‘focusing of attention’ – depending on the tradition of origin. However, through the practice of yoga, we aim to integrate mind, body and spirit, fulfilling our potential for vibrant good health. This includes a strong, supple body, clear and calm mind.
There are many ways in which yoga can be practised. Most people in Western culture begin with postures – asana, and work with the breath – pranayama. When yoga begins in this way it is known as Hatha Yoga. Some well known forms of Hatha Yoga are Astanga Vinyasa Yoga, Iyengar Yoga, Vinyasa Flow.
Amanda studied Astanga Vinysasa Yoga for some years: astanga meaning eight limbs, while vinyasa means ‘breath connecting movement’. Flowing movements synchronised with the breath are characteristic of ‘vinyasa,’ and also of Sun Salutations which are practised at the beginning of the Astanga series and in many of Amanda’s classes.
