Laura Henry – Harrogate Yoga’s teacher for beginner yoga students

Laura Henry, the beginners yoga teacher for Harrogate Yoga, is delighted to have this role. She’s passionate about how the mindful practice of yoga can transform individual’s lives for the better, at whatever age one starts!

Laura first began practising yoga in 2004 when working in an emotionally demanding job. She immediately experienced the mind-body relationship and loved the opportunity to move, connect with her body and feel restored. After years of practicing Hatha, Astanga and vinyasa flow, Laura completed her Teacher Training Diploma with Yogacampus in 2017. Laura’s teachers include Amanda Latchmore, Jane Craggs and Graham Burns. Laura continues her professional development through trainings with Lisa Kaley-Isley (yoga for anxiety and depression), Julie Gudmestad (yoga for the lower-back) and Lisa Arnsby Wilson (transforming trauma through yoga).

Laura embraces the philosophy of yoga into her whole life and connects this with her interest in positive psychology and well-being to bring these teachings ‘off the mat’. Laura works with children and young people in a well-being role and uses breathing and relaxation techniques to help children learn to regulate their emotions. Laura encourages her students to tune into their own experience during lessons and pay attention to what they want to work on in their home practice.

Laura is currently training as a yoga therapist for children and young people at the Creative Calm studios in Manchester. The work integrates practices of yoga such as breath awareness, mindfulness, physical postures, mantra and relaxation, alongside the philosophy of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. Also utilised are current knowledge and theory from psychology and neuroscience. Together with the therapeutic relationship and an individually tailored programme, the intention is for the young person to begin to observe their feelings and emotions – a greater understanding of self can then follow. Through enhanced understanding of self, the potential is created to change mind/body experience, ultimately cultivating emotional balance on and off the mat. Yoga therapy can also offer a set of skills and practices to promote lifetime wellbeing.

          About Amanda

“I began practising yoga in 1972 and I loved the effect it had on me – of gradually becoming stronger in mind and body, more resilient to life’s ups and downs, more connected to my feelings, more joyful and more creative. Both my yoga journey and my creativity gained momentum in the early nineties, it was at this time that I was privileged to begin learning Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga………….”
